The Chalon Restaurant - Los Angeles

The Chalon Mart was huge. It occupied part of the first and second floors of the Los Angeles Home Furnishing Mart. The first floor had a Dining Room, room for small parties called the “French Room”, a Bar adjacent to the Dining Room, a Cigar Shop and a Coffee shop. The second floor had two banquest rooms, the smaller caleed the Los Angeles Room and the larger was the California room and a seond bar next to the Los Angeles Room. There were kitchens on both Floors. The Chalon Manchester also had several different themed dining rooms, a bar and a coffee shop but wasn’t nearly as big as the Mart. There was a third Chalon in Pasedena on Colorado Blvd. The Chalon Manchester was sold in the early 70′s and the Chalon Mart was sold in the late 70′s. The Chalon Pazedena became the La Palapa in the early 80s.

left of the car service sign in the picture. Chalon was located at 1455 W.
Manchester Blvd. in Inglewood, CA. I remember it well in my younger years.
There was a man named Chuck that played a piano in front of the rock wall
in the bottom picture. Chuck would play a cute little piano riff with a
robotic kitty with pink light up eyes that would walk on the bar top.

Pretty cool stuff back in the mid 1960’s. I would hang around there for
many hours and look foreword to the best spaghetti dinner I can remember. I
was there a lot as this restaurant belonged to my grandfather, Armand
Devigne & his wife Eudoxie. My father Rene’ Devigne was manager for many
years as Armand & my uncle, Ray Gahagan managed the Chalon Restaurant #2,
located on the 2 lower floors of the Los Angeles Home Furnishings Mart. The
3rd ‘Armand Devigne's Chalon’ opened in the late 1970’s on Colorado Blvd in
Pasadena and was reminiscent of the Chalon in these pictures, and very
close in size with 3 dining rooms. The pictured building has been gone for
some time now, but the other 2 are still standing but not now a Chalon
Restaurant. It dose my hart good to see the Chalon remembered here on
Flicker and I hope this little bit of history adds to it for Restaurant Buffs.
