A Mid-Century Shopping Centre in Northern Sweden
Shopping is the world’s first interior shopping center ever built. This mid-century gem is hidden away in the cold northern parts of Sweden. It was designed by famed British-Swedish architect Ralph Erskine and completed in 1955. Erskine wanted to create something that would be enjoyable for everyone all year round, not being dependent on the current (and sometimes harsh) weather conditions. The shopping centre was to become a natural meeting point for everyone in the city and to offer both entertainment, dining and plenty of merchandise and goods for all the family. It was nick named “a city within the city”. The unique floor plan of the shopping center features multiple levels that are offset to each other by half a level and all connected by numerous staircases and escalators – creating a maze that can be a bit confusing to navigate for first comers. The huge concrete pillars and walkways supporting the construction makes it a look a bit cold but at the same time very clean and easy on the eyes. This type of design was very popular throughout the 1950s, ’60s and ’70s – especially in northern Europe. Shopping also featured a unique cinema in its inner lower parts. Nicknamed “The Grotto“, it was built to resemble a massive cave with its egg-shaped layout and raw concrete walls. It was however forced to close down in 1988 when a big multiplex cinema opened nearby. The mall is still around today, although with a updated design and the housing of the typical anchor stores found in every mall nowadays. C’est la vie.

Emporium department store was built in 1951 as part of the Stonestown Mall. The buildings, including this one, were designed by Welton Becket. This building has housed a Macy's store since 1996
This vintage gem just arrived and is it grand! In the foreground are late Forties and early Fifties cars and abundant palm trees, always favored by the Stoneson brothers (the developers of the neighborhood and mall).
In the background is the famed "E" of the Emporium department store, which opened July 16, 1952. The rest of the mall had an official opening date of November 6, 1952. Other original tenants included Walgreens, F.W. Woolworth's, and the Red Chimney restaurant.

Un autre emporium:
the Stanford Shopping Center in Palo Alto, California (now a Simon mall anchored by Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdale's, Nordstrom and Macy's), with a nice shot of the mall's old Emporium department store facade/entrance as well. Some Wikipedia history notes on the mall's store lineups over the years:
"Macy's California joined the center in 1961 and Saks Fifth Avenue opened a store in 1962. Further expansion came again in 1972 with the addition Los Angeles-based Bullock's, owned by Bloomingdale's parent company Federated Department Stores. Bullock's only lasted eleven years, closing its Northern California stores in 1983 and selling its Stanford location to Nordstrom, which opened in November 1984. Neiman Marcus became the sixth anchor in August 1985.
Saks Fifth Avenue closed their store in 1994 and was replaced by Crate and Barrel and Andronico's food market. By 1995, Federated Department Stores had acquired the Macy's, I. Magnin, and Emporium chains. As part of the company's rationalization, the I. Magnin chain was closed, and the location at Stanford became a separate Macy's Men's Store in 1995. The Emporium store was shuttered and rebranded as Bloomingdale's in November 1996, this being the first northern California location for that division of Federated."
For an added bonus, check out this cool "virtual reality" panorama view of the Stanford Shopping Center.
Mall history: 1956

McGraw-Hill distribution center.. later Birkenstock
Novato Cal.
Built in 1962-63, this huge and strikingly modern building served as a distribution warehouse for McGraw-Hill from 1964 to 1992. It was designed by prolific Bay area architect John Savage Bolles, the man who also designed Candlestick Park (1958-60) and the famous Building 25 on IBM's San Jose campus (1957).
From 1992 to 2008, it was home to Birkenstock before they relocated to Hamilton Landing in south Novato. It sat vacant and unused for a number of years, before Birkenstock moved back in 2014. They've down a great job making the campus look nice, but the warehouse is now in need of some structural repairs. Hopefully they can be made to ensure that this beautiful and unique place is with us for a long time.
