Someone posted a photo of one of these houses for sale the other day in Midland Michigan. I took a little road trip to look at it and discovered two other houses, apparently by the same architect, on the same street. Amazing!
The architect is Alden B. Dow who studied with Frank Lloyd Wright just before these houses were built. Next week I'm going to take a tour of the Alden B. Dow Home and Studio in Midland Michigan.

If you happen to be looking for a location for a US movie or period drama set in the middle of the 20th century, you probably want to jump onto four-bedroom 1950s midcentury modern property in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA. It just happens to be for sale.



It’s an amazing place, both inside and out. From the outside, its curved shape, sloping roof and distinctive windows will certainly grab your attention. Walk inside and you really are stepping back in time.




I honestly don’t know where to start. Room dividers, curved fireplaces, light fittings, the bar (and accessories), the cupboards, the kitchen, the bathrooms, the old TV. We could go on and on. Some of it you might want to keep, other bits less so. But there are so many original features here, a period renovation is crying out.



This 1956 build has four bedrooms in their own wing, as well as a family room and living room with floor to ceiling windows, a fairly large kitchen, a large formal dining room and much more over the 3,600 sq. ft. Looks to be a good amount of outside space too, with a plot covering 1.6q acres.

A JOLIET GEM. Renowned architect John Semitekol, who studied under Mies van der Rohe, designed and built this home as his personal residence in 1955; it has been enjoyed by his family ever since. A classic Mid-Century abode, with abundant sunlight and natural materials throughout. Large lot, mature trees, in one of Joliet's best neighborhoods.

Located in Sydney, Australia and completed in 1950 the Rose Seidler House was designed by Harry Seidler for his parents Rose and Max and was unlike anything that had been built previously in the country. The Rose Seidler house is still there today and open for tours.

The Mayrath house at 10707 Lennox Ln. is a Midcentury Modern gem. It was designed by Dallas architect and homebuilder Truett A. Bishop in 1956, and is largely unchanged since then.

This house on Mulholland Drive, southern California, was originally designed for jazz musician Russ Garcia. When? 1964. Architect John Lautner, master of “googie” architecture, was the creator. You might wonder: What’s “googie” architecture?

It’s modern architecture with a futurist spin, influenced by our car culture, the Space Age, and so-called “Atomic Age”. Features include upswept roofs, curved, geometric shapes, and dramatic use of glass, steel, and neon. Boomerangs, flying saucers, atoms and parabolic shapes are prominently incorporated. Garcia’s “Rainbow House” is a prime example. The spaceship has definitely landed!

At the start of the 21st century the Rainbow House’s best days were far behind. Way too many “improvements” had robbed the house of its soul.

But now, things are looking up “somewhere over the rainbow.” Current owners of “Rainbow House” have had the house renovated by architects Marmol & Radziner, and decorated by Darren Brown—restoring that old 1960’s “playboy mansion” feel to the house. Wonder if that includes a “gold-plated” pot of gold?
