1957 Oldsmobile Custom "Golden Star" by John d'Agostino
277 hp, 371 cu. in. OHV V8 engine, four-speed Hydramatic transmission, air-ride front suspension by wishbones and air ride rear with semi-solid live axle, four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes. Wheelbase: 122"
- International award-winning John D’Agostino Custom
- 65,000 original miles, Northern California car
- 2007 Grand National Winner, with Barris and Bailon awards
- Adjustable air-ride suspension, modern air conditioning
1957 was a great year for Oldsmobile, with 384,390 cars sold and fifth place in the industry. A complete restyle included a three-piece rear window and the first Olds station wagon since 1950 – including the four-door pillarless Super 88 Fiesta wagon. Warming up for GM’s 50th anniversary, Olds renamed its entry series Golden Rockets and offered three series of cars: the 88, Super 88 and 98.
Customizer John D’Agostino was attending a car show at Bethel Island, California when a fan drove up in a red and white ’57 Oldsmobile. “I came here because I want to sell the car and I know you like ’57s,” he told D’Agostino. The seller said he’d restored the car about 10 years ago and the engine was rebuilt. D’Agostino agreed to buy it, and the seller said, “Keep the keys, drive it home. We’ll take care of the money part later.”
D’Agostino chopped the top 3¾ inches, changing the rear profile slightly. He put air-ride adjustable suspension in the car, modern air-conditioning, inserted a ’58 Buick grille and modified the headlights. He repainted the car in candy gold, with the interior in pearl gold and matching brocade, naming it “Golden Star.”
D’Agostino went to the 2007 Grand National, and Golden Star won a first place for best paint. He won a George Barris award in Sacramento and a Joe Bailon award at the Fresno invitational, and Golden Star was runner-up Custom of the Year at the Good Guys shows.
After entering its current collection, the car took a Scandinavian show tour, winning Best of Show and People’s Choice in Norway, Sweden and Finland. Returning to the US, Golden Star was displayed at the Petersen Automotive Museum. It is typical of D’Agostino’s work – gorgeous styling with world-class attention to detail.

PAINT: This is a "buddy" job, not show quality.
INTERIOR: Needs work. Currently no headliner. The car will also need new door panels (not that hard if you don't mind back stapling fabric to some hardboard - We could do it for you should you be willing to pay us for the job)
SUSPENSION: These are cut springs. Personally, I would buy new drop springs (about $200) so that the car wouldn't be so "slammed" - or go with bags. They are pretty easy to do on these assuming you know how to do them.
NEEDS window wipers
