1949 MERCURY COUPE "LEAD SLED"
This beauty came to us by a local collector who is no longer able to drive. He purchased this car completely restored and always kept it in a climately controlled garage.
Lets start its history:
The car was built in 1999 by two professional restoration experts in Florida. One of the craftsmen told me that when they purchased the car it was unusually solid without a speck of rust anywhere. All the original metal was and still is intact on the vehicle. The restoration process took months to complete. In addition to all that you see, an adjustable suspension was installed making it simple to raise and lower the vehicle. It was six inches off the ground when it was sold to a collector in Vermont. The new owner had them lift the car as you see it now. It was sold at the Daytona show in 2000.
The exterior:
The paint shines like new. No blemishes anywhere. The chrome is brillient. Brand new look all the way around. The Desoto grill is massive and beautiful! The roof is dropped six inches. The headlights and taillights are French'd. As are the antenna ports. Hidden buttons under the rear fenders activate the door opener and trunk lid. The door handles, hood and trunk ornimants have been removed when it was nosed and decked. The car is lowered and is equipped with side pipes that are for show only. She does have duel glass packs. The caddy wheel covers, fender skirts and wide white tires really set this sexy car off!
All in all it was a masterfull restoration! Nothing on the body was ignored Thousands were spent on the paint alone.
Interior:
The interior is tastefully done and in "like new" condition. The plush interior is immaculate. No rips, tears or blemishes anywhere. The same can be said about the carpeting, dash and gauge package. The car is equipped with power windows, power seats, power doors, power steering, power antennas and power disc front brakes and after market air conditioning that blows cold. Everything works to perfection.
The floor pans and complete under carriage are original and excellent. Not a hint of rust or damage anywhere.
I couldn't resist taking her down the road. The GM 350 small block and the 350 Turbo Highdromatic trans preformed like new. The car drives like new. Runs strong, fast and stops on a dime.

Re: Mercury 1949 - 51 custom & mild custom galerie
There is really no better way to wrap this post than with a 1951 Mercury representing as the quintessential Lead Sled. Unlike some of the more extreme cars at Billetproof, this one looks very much like something you’d see at a California car show circa 1959 or so. Another time capsule.
All of the traditional custom elements were there, including wide whites and full wheel covers.
As well as the cop car style spotlights mounted up front. I’ve never been quite sure what these were used for (fooling around I’m guessing?) but it’s an important part of the look.
As is the subtle pinstriping laid over the Merc’s turquoise paint job.

1950 MERCURY CHOPPED TOP
1950 custom chopped top mercury, sedan street rod ( very easy project!!! ) The Mercury is equipped with a great running 302 ford v8, c4 automatic trans power steering, power disc brakes, power trunk, tilt steering, and more! The top has been chopped about 3 1/2 inches, it has been shaved, decked, and has one off custom bumpers. The candy apple red paint on the mercury looks good,( not perfect) set off by old school free hand pin stripping, and fine line flames. The seats were done awhile ago, and still look pretty good the head liner is new ( needs door panels, and carpet )... It has fat white wall tires, dummy spots, car cover and on!! The sled needs side glass, interior garnish moldings finished.etc.

1951 Mercury, mild custom
Selling my very rare, non chopped, 1951 Mercury coupe, mild custom. I have owned the car a little over two years .... have never registered the car, so the new buyer will receive the title from the gentleman that sold it to me. It has stayed in my garage and down to my mechanic's garage where it has received a lot of TLC. Fluids changed with Syn. oil and coolant flush ... a couple of small leaks fixed. We then added the side pipes .. just for looks, and just recently installed a new set of Coker Classic wide white wall tires and new "spider" hubcaps on the front.
The engine is a 350 Chevy small block crate motor, and has an aluminum intake with an Edlebrock 4bbl carb. Engine has a serpentine belt driving all accessories, including the A/C unit. I don't believe the engine/trans assy to be very old as the bar code label is still on the block, and the mounting bolts appear to be quite new. The trans is a TH400 four speed overdrive unit, and performs perfectly. We have also added a new battery and new electric fuel pump.
The Merc also has power steering and power disc brakes on the front. It has a super exhaust system that just "burbles" at idle and has just the right growl at speed. The body has been lowered as shown in the pictures ... but NOT chopped. The body has been "nosed" and "decked", and doorhandles "shaved". The headlights and taillights have been "frenched" in. It has a special grill and two "dummy" spotlights as shown. It has a modern steering column from a modern Mercury car, and has tilt wheel. The seats, door panels & headliner have all been done in a very high end "leather look" vinyl .
The underside of the car has been preserved with black paint or undercoat. The floors are original and show no sign of being rusted or replaced. The trunk floor and tire well also show no sign of being rusted or replaced. The paint job is older and has some touch up spots and a couple of chips. The radio does not work !
Have only gone to a couple of local shows as the car is not registered .... but was awarded 1st place in custom division at local show.
