Kem Weber: The Mid-Century Modern Designer Who Paved the Way for IKEA

In the 1930s, long before the mid-century modern movement became all the rage in homes and offices across America, an architect and designer named Kem Weber was already designing the clean, sleek look that would eventually define the modernist style.

His 1934 assemble-it-yourself “Airline Chair” ($24.75 at the time) was designed to be packed in a cardboard container and assembled by the customer at home. It was decades ahead of IKEA!

Denmark | Hans Wegner Ox chair in rare blue leather. Designed in 1960, the Ox chair was originally produced by A.P. Stolen, but only until 1962 due to technical and market problems. It remained out of production until 1985, when it was re-issued by Jorgensen, who remains the only licensed manufacturer. This example was produced in the late 1980’s.
