Vortex X 2000 - Jerry Woodward - 1962

Un petit post sur ce custom de show complètement délirant de 1962, qui été en vente encore hier sur Ebay motors.
Le texte d'Ebay:
Historic 1962 Vortex Custom
Featured Car at the Grand National Roadster Show in 1962

One of a kind, rare, historic, custom car by famous builder who was inducted into the Hall of Fame.
There are some collector cars that seem to have universal appeal.  By that we mean that these cars appeal to collectors of various categories such as antique car collectors, classic car collectors, muscle car collectors, custom car collectors and foreign car collectors.  The car that is pictured in this ad pushes all the bells and whistles for all collectors.  It is a historic custom car that in 1962 was about as famous as any single car can get.  It was on the cover of several magazines and was in many publications of the days.  The creator is in the Custom Hall of Fame and it was the feature car in the 1962 Grand National Roadster Show.  It is currently in the ORIGINAL condition; paint, interior, engine, etc. as it was in 1962.  It has not been restored, again it is ORIGINAL!  Talk about other buttons that you can push for a car collector, listen to Wayne Carini on Chasing Classics say, “it is only original once”…well look at this car as the statement would fit this car perfectly!

We know that the current crop of custom cars, especially those made of fiberglass, are a dime a dozen, but true historic custom cars appeal to U.S. car collectors, museums and especially the foreign car collectors in Australia, New Zealand and Sweden, this car has it all.  We are happy to announce that MissChiTown has been given the exclusive right to market this car for the seller and as always we do our best to present the marketing on our Ebay site so that the buyer’s can make an intelligent decision that this is the car for his collection.

We can only suggest that you check out the pictures of this car and if you are as enthused as we are you will not be disappointed (if you are lucky enough to be the winner of this car) when the car is delivered to you.  This car is capable of cruising at highway speeds at 70 m.p.h. and handles as well as you would expect this car would be the hit of any car show whether it be a classic car show, custom car show or even a high end car show like Pebble Beach.

This car is equipped with drum brakes at each wheel, rear mounted 450 h.p. engine, 3-speed manual transmission, a Ford product rear end and no drive shaft.  The deck lid behind the driver is power operated.  The antennas behind the headrests operate the radio.  We love the basic jet age ‘Star Wars’ motif that this car represents.

The X2000 was a three wheeled futuristic show car built by Jerry Woodward of Provo, Utah. Jerry's creation was originally dubbed the "X1970-Vortex", but he renamed it X2000 to indicate that it was the car of the next century. Jerry spent six years assembling the Vortex in the rear of an auto glass shop ha and his father owned and operated. The streamlining of the front end was designed to produce stability at high speeds, and the engine, a 1952 Lincoln V8, was therefore placed in the rear. The engine was bored to 345 cubic inches. It was also given an all-out souping treatment for an estimated total horsepower of 450. Power was transmitted through a 10-inch Auburn clutch and a 1950 Lincoln tranmission. The body was hand-formed and rolled from 20 gauge black metal and finished in blue metallic paint with white trim. The rear end of the car incorporated a full-width red lucite blinker made out of 14 light bulbs and a special reflector. The rear bumper was from a 1958 Lincoln, and the dashboard was from a 1950 Nash. An integral roll bar framed the windshield. The frame was hand-made, and it featured a 133-inch wheelbase and 72-inch rear tread. A fork type suspension held the single front wheel, while the rear suspension incorporated swing axles and Chrysler torsion bars. Jerry ran 1950 Lincoln wheels on the car. The total weight of the car was two ton. After completing the build, Jerry test ran the car on the Utah salt flats, achieving more than 150 mph. According to Jerry, the unique construction allowed a right-angle turn at 40 mph in completely safety.

The build was completed in 1962. February 16 - 25, 1962 the car was shown at the Grand National Roadster Show. The car was shown on the cover of the Official Souvenir Program for the show. Later on the same year it landed the cover of Car Craft June 1962 and Customs Illustrated November 1962. Jerry, who had won the "America's Most Beautiful Roadster" award with his 1929 Ford Model A Roadster "Thunder Rod" in 1957 was later inducted into the Hall of Fame.

In September of 2013 the X2000 was advertised for sale on eBay. At the time it was still in the original condition, unrestored. The paint, interior, engine appeared as it did in 1962.
