Hihra OY - station service tin toys 50s
Hihra OY was a metal company based in Turku, South-West Finland. It was founded in 1947, and was best known as one of the very few european companies making steel frames for Fujitsu computers. In the late forties-early fifties Hihra was known as a toy maker, as import of toys from abroad was strictly limited after the war. The foreign currency needed for imported goods was used to buy necessary goods, and
toys were not seen as such. When Hihra expanded it’s toys catalogue to metal toys they took the molds from the german Götz & Sohn (GÖSO) Volkswagen panel van and used them in making their own, slightly different VW van. The chromed VW symbol was left out, and the wheels have rims made of yellow plastic instead of metal. It’s not known if the Hihra company had a license for use of GÖSO moulds or not; the van still appears in the finnish market, but the number produced must have been small, and the van can be considered scarce.
Another early Hihra product is a Shell service station, which appears in the market maybe a little more often than the VW van. The delicate parts, especially the red hoses and the pistols from the gasoline pumps are nearly always missing (or replaced), and the hats of the meters are often gone. The design of the toy bears a close resemblance to german stations of the era (Arnold, Hoch & Beckman), so it wouldn ’t be far from the truth to call the Hihra station a copy.
