Sunset and Cahuenga Blvd in 1963. The first film to premier at The Cinerama Dome was, “It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World” seen on the marquee. The Variety offices were next door. Today Amoeba Records occupies that building. And check out those gas prices...

Highland Ave circa 1940s. In the distance, past the Red Car, you can see the tower of the Hollywood First National Bank building on the Northeast corner of Hollywood Blvd at Highland.

Cruising Wilshire Blvd in 1956! Photo snapped by a passenger in a 1954 Buick! Here’s what’s still with us: The El Rey Theatre on the right, the Prudential Building in the distance (now called Museum Square), and that Ralphs is STILL in the same location today, (just not the original building or sign). On the opposite side the old Silverwoods and Desmonds structures are still intact minus the neon sign on top. Tragically, The Mullen Bluett and Coulters department store buildings aren’t. This stretch was once filled with magnificent Art Deco architecture. No wonder they called it Miracle Mile...

Capitol Records! Just north of Hollywood and Vine in 1962!

“It’s MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD World” was the first movie to play at the The Cinerama Dome. The star-studded world premiere was held at the Dome on November, 7th, 1963. RCA was directly across the street (The Rolling Stones recorded “19th Nervous Breakdown in this studio!) And looks what next door! NORMS! Imagine all the recording sensations that stopped in. The Cinerama Dome was declared a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument on December 18, 1998! The RCA building is still there, but this Norms is long gone... – avec Dario Witer.

This Kodachrome image is one of the best documentations of Capitol Records under construction I’ve ever come across. Designed by Louis Naidorf of Welton Becket and Associates, the tower was the world’s first circular office building, constructed of reinforced concrete and punctuated by a series of porcelain enamel sun shades stepping down each floor of the building. The Tower has always been referred to as “The House That Nat Built” back in 1956 - referring to the success of Nat King Cole! – avec Bill North et Dario Witer.
