Sixties drag car, Street drag & super stocker
This 1963 Dodge 440 (chassis 6232191984) is a well modified street-legal drag car that was bought by publisher Keith Martin as part of his roll-out of a new magazine called American Car Collector. The car sports a 500 cubic inch, all aluminum Hemi V8 with 680 horsepower and runs high 10s in the quarter at 123 mph, but also runs at 170 degrees on the street and is 93-octane friendly. This beast is really well done, and is claimed to be based on a 45k original mile car that still sports 80% of its original paint and all original sheet metal. It is now available in Portland, Oregon for $42,500.
The car was equipped with a 318 V8 car from the factory, and was sourced out of Canada. It now has a full subframe under the unibody and is mini-tubbed with a Super Stock rear spring conversion. The rear end is a Dana 60 with 4.10 gears and Strange axles/spool. Wilwood manual discs are on all four corners, and a line lock is wired through the horn button. it comes with nearly new set of Hoosier slicks on matched Torq Thrust rims, but will be delivered on DOT legal street tires. Keith tells us that the body is laser straight and the finish is amazing for its age., and that the chrome and brightwork are in great shape too.
When asked about any current needs, these two fluid items were mentioned: “In the time ACC has had this car, we’ve noticed two small issues with it. First, the power steering system leaks. We haven’t needed to add fluid, so we haven’t really worried about it. Second, there is a little coolant seepage from the rear of one of the heads. Not enough to even drip, and again, we haven’t needed to add to the system. Neither of these problems have stopped us from using the car.”
The seller was told the interior is all original apart from a nicely re-covered front seat, and and the tone-on tone aqua colors are pretty awesome when combined with tire smoke. The Auto Meter gauges with silver faces and bezels work well given the modern mill, or a Sun tach and Stewart Warners could be swapped in for a more period look. A color-matched 8-point roll-cage is also installed, which is said to be certified for 9-second passes. Fresh 5-pt harness were installed to pass PIR tech this summer.
The engine is an Indy Maxx aluminum Hemi, with a solid roller cam, 10.5:1 Arias pistons, balanced steel crank & rods, MSD ignition, and a Demon 850 carb. It has custom-made equal-length headers and 2-chamber Flowmasters dumped before the rear axle. Shifting is handled by a push-button 727 transmission with reverse manual valve body and 3800 rpm ATI stall converter. Underhood presentation is excellent.

1961 Chevy Biscayne 2 Door
I bought this car from a gentleman who rescued it from a shed in Missouri. It was a local race car from the mid 1960’s to 1972 and then retired to the shed where he found it in 2005.
He found the car in pretty fair condition with minimal rust. Also said the former owner had replaced the front floor pans with sheet metal. They are solid but he said that they are not pretty.
This was pretty much a frame ON as needed restoration. He repainted the car Satin Red, went through the motor, put new brakes, lines, shoes & master cylinder & replaced any other items that needed to be replaced. He put in new carpet & upholstery, including replacing the headliner. This is quality workmanship-no overspray from the paint. Bolts and hinges and anything that was not supposed to be painted was not painted. New door & window rubber except for the rear window. It had no leaks so he did not want to take the chance of breaking it.
This car was a trailer queen. He trailered it to a few local car shows. He sold it to enable him to finish his 1953 Henry J “A” gasser.
MOTOR
283 power pack
Installed new Crane cam 290 lift
New lifters
Ball tip push rods
Roller rockers by Comp Cam
Edelbrock intake-carb double pumper 750
65000 HEI distributor
New Griffin radiator
Heavy duty trans cooler
New Gabriel air shocks on rear end
Rear end-10 bolt positive traction-gear unknown
Period correct pie crust cheaters mounted on true chrome reverse rims.
I bought the car with the intentions of putting it on the road. Due to health problems, my wife & doctor have brought my car days to a screeching halt, therefore I am selling the car.
It had open headers so the first thing that I did was to install headers and mufflers.
It had the wrong stall converter so I put a new 3000 600 horsepower rated and that took care of the problem.

1963 Ford Fairlane Thunderbolt Replica 427ci Cross Ram V8 4Spd Street Legal
The 1963 Ford Fairlane Thunderbolt replica seen here was built to be as exact a copy of the original 11 as possible!! Finished in stunning Vintage Burgundy with Tan vinyl Interior and powered by a center oiler 427ci V8!! The car started life as a dry California built Fairlane 500, just as the original 11 did!
It was then treated to a complete restoration of the body, interior, suspension, brakes, plumbing, wiring, interior, chrome, trim, weather stripping, and so on. The front fenders, “teardrop” hood, and front bumper are fiberglass pieces just like the originals. A 1963 427ci V8 engine and 4-speed transmission were then installed along with a new 9 inch ford rear end with a spooled differential and 4:56 gear set.
The engine received a complete rebuild along with a set of Edelbrock RPM aluminum heads, Vintage Mickey Thompson “Power Ram” cross ram intake, dual Holley Performer Carburetors, Edelbrock Aluminum water pump, 9 Quart Oil Pan, full length Tube Headers, finned Cobra valve covers, custom grind solid lifter camshaft, Mallory Distributor, Mallory Performance Coil and Taylor Race wires. The rare, but correct headlight air intake snorkels replace the inner headlights and funnel fresh air to the carbs.
Just like the original cars, this one was treated to all the weight saving techniques possible. The boys at Dearborn Steel used the delete button on everything. The radio, heater, sun visors, passenger wiper blade, cigar lighter, rear window cranks, sound deadening, carpeting, bench seats were all deleted!! Rubber floor mat, front econoline buckets, auxiliary engine gauges, Hurst shifter, and manual everything rounded out the interior.
The auxiliary gauges in this car are Autometer Temperature, Oil Pressure and Tachometer with shift light. This car features period correct Torque Thrust D mag wheels wrapped in Mickey Thompson “ET Street” Slicks. Fronts are 25x4.5 and the rears are 28x11.5 all with excellent tread life left in them! An extra electric pusher fan was installed to aid in cooling during heavy traffic, but we never needed it on our test drive. High volume fuel pump and fuel filters keep the motor feed, along with a new factory gas tank. Flowmaster single chamber mufflers and welded exhaust channel spent fuel out under the rear axle.

1969 Boss 302 1970 Mustang Prototype Superstock
What the hey? Isn’t that a 1970 front clip? Isn’t that a 428 between the suspiciously lightweight front fenders? What’s going on here anyhow? What’s going on is that Bob Wytosky’s mash-up Mustang is a true survivor. Its early years are a bit mysterious, but it seems it was used by Ford for some brake and interior parts fitment and testing during the development of the Boss 302 program in 1968. Tony Rainero was an engineer at Ford in the late ’60s, and when the testing was completed on the car, he purchased it (for $1) and began drag racing it with some factory backing.
Tony raced all the big events, sharing the staging lanes with the Super Stock and Pro Stock legends.
Tony raced primarily in the NHRA SS/H class under official sponsorship from Stark Hickey Ford. Tony did well in the car, even beating the official factory Ford racers on occasion, a feat which he says won him no love from the higher-ups, although he did get a better parking space at the following race. Tony was based in Detroit, but he made regular journeys west to race the Winter Nationals in Pomona. The Mustang was raced until 1978, with a series of different engines, transmissions, paint, and prototype body panels, and then set aside in a shipping container until 2012, when Bob Wytosky took on the task of restoring it.
“All we did was recreate the Stark Hickey paint job and reassemble it,” Bob told us. SEMA marks the debut of the car, and earlier in the week it was reunited with Tony Rainero. “It looks just like I remember it,” Tony said. “Only it sounds better.”
“I don’t know why it sounds better,” Bob said. “It’s the same engine Tony built back in the day, we just put in back in the car.”
With all the hot machines here at SEMA, we were really struck by the details on this car. Many of the decals are NOS originals, the interior is as it was in 1978, the wheels are period correct Fenton Gyros in front and Ford prototype offsets in the rear, and all wrapped in ’70s slick rubber. The paint job, especially the fiery fade on the hood took more than 20 straight hours in a paint booth, which according to Tony, is also period correct. “Ford designed this paint scheme back in 1970,” he said. “It was painted by Bill Stroppe’s shop out in California. It was just a day before the Winter Nats. The painter went in in the morning, and the next morning, he was still in there. We were biting our nails, but he came out just in time and said, ‘This is the best paint job I’ve ever done. Don’t ever bring this car back to me again.’”
