Eastern Blocker: 1964 WFM Osa M-52
This scooter, made by Warszawska Fabrica Motocyklowa (WFM), is powered by a 175cc two stroke motor. Typical of most Eastern Block scooters we have come across, the motor was a motorcycle engine that was shoehorned into a scooter frame. The M-52 had 8 horsepower on tap, and was mated to a three-speed gearbox.
The lines on this scooter are actually quite handsome. Because the motor was placed well forward in the frame, those grills below the seat were actually functional. Don’t wear a long skirt on this scooter when riding on a hot day!
Unlike many scooters, the M-52 has large 12” wheels. We suppose that was a reflection of the poor state of the roads in Poland at the time. In any case, it is likely that the large wheels and hefty size of this scooter would combine to give the M-52 a pretty smooth ride for an old two stroke scooter.
This scooter is reminiscent of the more commonly found Eastern Block scooter, the Berlin, from East Germany. However, we think the large wheels and the styling on the M-52 set it apart. The market in the U.S. for an oddity like this is likely quite limited.
