Re: 1927 Ford "t" Pick up hot rod - The Black Widow - Monogram - 1/24 scale
En 2005 / 2006 le model kit devient réalitée!!!
In 1960, Monogram, the maker of plastic model kits, manufactured a 1/24th scale kit titled the Black Widow. The car is a 1927 Ford roadster pickup ... hot rod style. In 1960 I was twelve years old. I built that kit and have always dreamed of having a roadster pickup like the model. I am now 57 years old in 2005 and that long-held dream came true -- yet there is more to the dream and that, too, came true.
In the mid 60's, my brother Sonny, built a show car and entered it in the Oakland Roadster Show (Grand National Roadster Show). Sonny's car won 3rd place in his category. After the show, while Sonny was serving in the US Navy during the Vietnam war, I got to drive that show car to high school. Can you possibly understand how cool that was for a high school kid to be going to school in a custom show car that won a trophy in the Grand National Roadster Show?
Therefore, my dream is not only to build a roadster pickup hot rod in the style of the Monogram model, the Black Widow, but to also show it at the Grand National Roadster Show ... and that dream became a reality in 2005/2006
These pages tell the story of a dream come true,
the story of ... Black Widow 2
...a full-scale model car
Me and My Car: This vehicle is a pickup for veterans' morale

SOME BOYS are born mechanically inclined, and handyman Rick Hanson, of Pleasant Hill, is one of them. Like many boys, he loved putting together model cars, and when he was 12 years old he built his favorite -- a Monogram 1/24th scale kit car of a 1927 Ford Roadster pickup called the Black Widow.
"Since then I had always dreamed of having a roadster pickup like the model," Hanson said, "and finally in 2005 my dream
came true."
The fulfillment of the dream started in 2002 when he bought a stock 1928 Model A Roadster pickup for $4,500. "I immediately sold the running gear for $1,200, so what I had left was $3,300 worth of sheet metal and nothing else,"
Hanson said.
He started collecting parts. He bought a 350 c.i.d. Chevy engine for $500 and a friend gave him a transmission -- though the repairs on it cost as much as a new transmission.
For a while, not much work was done on the project.
"The vehicle was stored in Lodi, collecting dust, until April 2005, when I met Kiril Popov and decided to make it the Black Widow 2 -- like the kit car I had built as a kid. My goal was to have it ready by January 2006 for the Grand National Roadster Show in Pomona.
"I explained my dream to Popov and he said, 'No problem. Whatever you want I can build.' " He was true to his word. The Bulgarian native shortened the bed of the truck, built fenders and splash aprons. He did work on the steering column, the floor and transmission tunnel as well as the brakes. "There is no doubt that without Popov there would not be the Black Widow 2," Hanson said.
Eight months later, Hanson entered his vehicle in the Grand National Roadster Show. Later he entered shows in
Sacramento, Portland and Seattle -- winning several awards.
Hanson has built eight vehicles, but this is his favorite. Once the show circuit was over, Hanson decided it was time to put his favorite vehicle to work. Hanson gave me a test ride and I don't think it was my good looks that caused heads to turn. I rode in the Black Widow 2 down the streets of Pleasant Hill and Martinez with four large American flags waving from the vehicle.
This pickup is definitely a head-turner and, if the accelerator i stomped on, a head-jerker as well. Add four flags and it's almost a parade by itself, which fit right in with its work assignment -- honoring returning troops.
Recently Hanson and the Black Widow 2 joined the Warriors' Watch, a national volunteer group started by some Vietnam veterans to provide no-cost escorts for military units and individuals returning from or deploying to war zones. They also help out first responders like police and firefighters.
Hanson's favorite assignment is to drive the Black Widow 2 as an escort vehicle followed by mostly flag-flying motorcycles
with a returning veteran sitting beside him.
"Street observers cheer and give the thumbs-up sign," he said. "Every time, it's a moving experience. We just can't do enough for these returning heroes."
