Burning Man, mostly when I see some of the creative vehicles. Not so when I see the inevitable dust storms. Here’s a few from this year’s event, although I don’t guarantee that. This is my favorite, and supposedly there’s a 1973 Cadillac
Rocket Car, built by David Best, based on a 1973 Cadillac.
This classic american car converted by David Best into an outrageously long black rocket car has been at Burning Man for many years, and it has become a fixture.

Peabody, Massachusetts must have been home to one of the most radically restyled 1941 Mercury's ever built! This photo from the Brian Frederick Collection shows John C. Silva, Jr.'s 1941 Mercury Club Coupe at the 1961 Hartford Autorama. The body on John's Merc was chopped, channeled and sectioned, and as you can see, the front was heavily massaged! Do anyone have more photos of this Merc to share?
More photos from the Frederick Collection can be found on Kustomrama: http://kustomrama.com/index.php?title=The_Brian_Frederick_Photo_Collection

Jon Southwick's 1954 Buick
1954 Buick Century Convertible owned and restyled by Jon Southwick of El Cerrito, California. John spent one year transforming his car into a full custom. The car was nosed, decked and shaved for door handles to achieve a cleaner appearance. Quad headlights were inset in the stock rims and tunneled. This was done by extending the fenders to house the stock 1954 Buick rims, and a chrome inner ring was used to beautify. The portholes were filled, a neat trick which is often overlooked. The grille shell was molded and the new grille cavity was filled with chromed 1956 Buick bumper guard centers. He also made space for a recessed license mount in the front roll pan. The rear bumper was removed as well, and a cavity was made featuring the same bullets as up front. The rear fenders were reworked into fins, housing 1955 Chrysler taillights. At the bottom of the fenders, bullets were molded for a sleek appearance. The car was lowered by chopping the springs, and outside pipes were custom built, and made the car appear even lower. Chromed reversed rims where installed, with custom bullet hubcaps made by 1936 Oldsmobile headlight housings. The interior was completely redone in white pleated and rolled Naugahyde and black carpets by R & D Upholstery in Albany, California. Once the car was done, it was painted Emerald Green lacquer.[1]
In 1960, Jon's Buick was featured in Custom Cars January 1960. Jon's name was misspelled "John" in the story.[2]

Anthony Abato's 1954 Oldsmobile
1954 Oldsmobile Convertible owned by Anthony Abato of Jersey City, New Jersey. Tony's Oldsmobile was also known as "The Comet". Tony bought the car brand new in 1954 and started to customize it right away. Both front and rear fenders were extended. The extended front fenders housed recessed canted quad Lincoln headlights and the rear fenders housed a pair of homemade Lucite lenses with thin chrome bands running through the center. The grille was made from a combination of DeSoto and Buick parts. A cut down 1957 DeSoto grille and bumper was used with 1959 Buick checkerboard trim. The side trim was made using 1/2 inch round rod that framed stainless steel panel inserts. Split bumpers protected the rolled pan in the rear. A conny kit was added to the custom rear end. This version of the car sported 1957 Cadillac hubcaps.[2]
Inside the car featured a white Naugahyde interior with contrasting buttons upholstered by Caravan Upholstery of Jersey City. When the car appeared in Trend Book 197 Custom Cars 1961 Annual the car had taken 3 months to build.[2] According to Traditional Rod & Kulture Illustrated 4 the car toured the East Coast Show Circuit until it was destroyed in a house fire in 1961.[3] But since the car is shown in Popular Customs Winter Issue 1963 at an indoor car show in Providence, Rhode Island together with the Car Craft Dream Rod the fire that destroyed the Comet must have happened after 1963, since the Car Craft Dream Rod wasn't completed until late 1963. This show coverage showed a redone version of the car. This version of the car had received a new front bumper and a grille with the lettering "COMET" integrated. The lakes pipes running along the rocker panels had also been molded in since its feature in 1961. The car was uodated with new hubcaps, and a new continental kit cover that matched the hubcaps.[4]
Anthony's son Gary Abato built a 1929 Ford Model A Tudor that he called The Comet as a tribute to his dad's old kustom.[3]
