O'Herren Vicky Gasser 1931
This car was selected for the subscriber issue, front cover, of The Rodder's Journal #55 because of the detail of construction and the use of almost exclusively period parts collected over a 40 year period to build this authentic 1961 gasser. This is a one of a kind recreation inspired by the early gas classes when a flagman, not a Christmas tree, started the race. A short period in history when the car that took you down the track on Sunday still took you to school the next day. This is not a car that was built out of a catalog and because of the rare parts incorporated in its build, it’ll never be built again.
BODY:1931 Original Steel back Victoria
Modifications: The vast majority of the wood substructure was removed and replaced with steel. The wood sub-floor was exchanged for square tubing knitted together, designed to strengthen the body and provide solid floor support. The wood “B” pillars were also cut out from the body and steel replacement pillars, exactly duplicating the original pieces, were fabricated and installed, greatly strengthening and stiffening the body. This also allowed the new pillars to use the original doorjamb covers and the original door latches giving a stock appearance and keeping to the period. This is just one example of a modification that took many , many hours and will never be noticed except by those with a very discerning eye. The few pieces of wood that were not replaced with steel, were inspected by an experienced cabinet maker and any pieces that were deemed to be questionable were replaced with new red oak. Steel floors including new doorsills and a transmission tunnel were fabricated and installed. A 1936 Ford dash was fitted and the gas tank in the cowl was removed. A cowl hoop was fabricated and installed to mount the brake assembly and to facilitate other mountings. The cowl top is removable to access the master cylinder, voltage regulator and other components.
The firewall was custom fabricated and welded from several panels of aluminum and then sent to the polishers. It is removable to ease extraction of the magneto. The front spreader bar is also removable.
All windows are fully functional and use the original restored risers and handles. All glass is new, tempered replacement pieces.
A 1932 Ford fuel filler has been recessed high into the rear “bustle” panel with an early Atlas locking cap. This is intended to look like factory badging and disguise the inlet. The filler feeds the fabricated aluminum fuel tank mounted below the seat, between the rear wheels and forward of the rear to protect it in the event of collision.
The roof insert is supported by Luan plywood which replaces the chicken wire and prevents the top from ballooning while driving with the windows open.
Fenders: Original Ford Steel

CHASSIS:
Frame: Original 1931 Ford frame extensively modified. Prior to boxing, steel bulkhead plates were welded in the “C” channels in a continuing “WWWWWW” pattern the entire length of the frame. These bulkhead plates were the height of the depth of the “C” channel filling the channel but with a smaller, top center section of these plates extending above the channel equal to the thickness of the boxing plate in the form of a tab. Corresponding slots were then cut into the boxing plates to accept these tabs and when the plates were installed on the frame the taps protruded through their respective plate slots (keyed), and were then tig welded, locking the frame, bulkheads and boxing plates into one solid unit. The object here is to prevent frame twisting under the most severe conditions. The frame was back halved with a small kick up. The tube rear cross member is located behind the rear axle and holds the spring mount that allows the spring to pivot and thereby adjust the pinion angle. A sub-frame of steel tubing spans the rails and includes a drop out transmission mount. A front driveshaft hoop is also installed. Because of the front lift the wishbone mounts had to hang down a bit so to insure their strength each were fabricated from five separate steel pieces while the tapered bungs were turned on the lathe. Motor mounts, again for strength, were each fabricated from eight separate pieces including sleeving for the lightening holes. Everything is tig welded.

1930 Chevy Gasser
History: This car has been stored for about 50 years following its racing days. The story goes that it ran a 409/4 speed and was a real NHRA A/Gas legal terror back in its day; right up until they scattered the engine for the last time and put it up some time around the mid 60's. (Sorry-that 409 driveline is long gone). It was rescued from storage and has been restored to its former glory. All the good original gasser parts were saved. This is absolutely NOT a rat rod! Clear, up to date registered title in my name!! Too much to list; but here goes:
Car: All original steel and perfect 1930 Chevy two door Coach sedan body and frame. The body and doors have never had any patch panels and have absolutely no rust. Everything is mirror perfect straight! The original wood inner structure is still there in most places (replaced with new if questionable during restoration) and has been reinforced with hidden heavy steel supports. The fenders, running boards, grille shell and hood top are original heavy weight 1960's Cal Custom fiberglass Chevy style. Everything has been beautifully re-painted in 1960’s look metallic blue; show car quality. The door art and decals are replicas from its old days on the strip. Windshield is safety glass, side and back windows are the original blue tint plexiglass. Door windows have the racing style old Chrysler seat belt latches. The headlights are small Deitz with 32 Ford tie bar. The roof insert is brand new old style reproduction stock cloth with all new wood, etc. Aluminum firewall, hidden steel hoop inside cowl. Rechromed door handles.
Interior: The interior is restored and mostly original 1960’s Gasser. The single hoop roll bar and support are attached to the frame. The seats are original racing buckets with metallic blue vinyl. The door panels side panels and headliner are new white vinyl and matching metallic blue vinyl. Chrome steering column with old Moon wheel. Original 1960’s Sun tach works perfectly. Gages are new repro SW with curved glass. Modern Lokar shifter. Original aluminum racing battery box, new battery. Custom white fire extinguisher. Original style Rat Fink decal on the dash for luck!
Frame: 9 inch Ford Nodular iron rear axle, with 3:91 gear. Has a spool with Detroit Locker, set up perfectly. Frame is boxed original Chevy. The front axle is a brand new Chromed straight axle and all chromed steering gear. The box is a brand new Vega style with custom dropped pitman arm for no bumpsteer.
There is evidence of where the old ladder bars were on the frame and axle, but I did not replace those.
Brake system is power; with floor pedal. Rear brakes are new Ford. The front brakes are now new disk with braided lines. Chrome front shocks. Push button start, all new electrical system with turn signals, etc. Rear bumper is the authentic old school chromed steel pipe. Front tie bar is chromed steel pipe. Tail lights are original style 1950 Pontiac round glass.

Re: Hot rod gasser
Engine: The best part!! It is dressed like an early 396 Big Block, but is actually a .030 over 454 Big Block from a Corvette. Completely rebuilt, oval port heads. Lunati Voodoo cam, twin Edelbrock 600 four barrels on a lowrise Edelbrock manifold. Polished aluminum scoop. Roller rockers, all the good parts inside. Pump gas friendly 10:1. MSD box, rev limiter, distributor. All steel lines with braided hoses and external fuel pressure gage and pump. New gas tank. New racing duty driveshaft. The original Eelco tank up front is now the radiator catch can.
Chrome appearance ceramic coat headers with full street exhaust, crossover and turbo mufflers. Also includes original side exit headers separately! New flanges on those headers to bolt onto the BB if you want. Huge new Walker radiator with electrical fan. Chrome alternator. This engine is awesome!
Transmission: Turbo 400 with a 2000 stall convertor for the street now. Aluminum crossmember, external trans cooler. Chrome pan. I have to be honest, the front seal weeps a little bit from sitting. If the car was driven, this seal would swell back up correctly.
Tires: Pie Crust White Wall Radir slicks, Moroso Front Runner tires. The wheels are the original 1960’s American Racing D aluminum for a correct look. Rear has long studs for racing.
