1951 Mercury Custom Lead Sled
This is a 1951 Mercury Lead Sled with award winning custom paint and an award winning
This car features a GMPP ZZ3 crate engine and a turbo 350 automatic transmission for easy starting and nice road manners for driving. The car has a 10 bolt posi rear differential and a complete air bag suspension. The bottom of the car is completed to the level the top is, the rear differential is painted to match the yellow, the wheel wells are painted to match the green and the front section of the car has stainless steel mirrored plates and the rear has a polished fuel cell. The engine compartment, valve covers and air cleaner are also painted to match. The car features stainless steel exhaust exiting directly in the center of the rear bumper via an 8 inch polished stainless steel tip. The car also has GM front disc brakes.
The car's interior is done in a saddle colored carpeting with white leather seats and trim. Inside you will see Vintage Air in the center console and the system is completely hidden from view. The rear view mirror features a transmission gear shift indicator that has an amber glow. Both front seats are power as are the windows and door locks. The car has power steering and a custom steering wheel. Last but not least the car has tinted glass the entire way around. The rear view camera is mounted on the center console for ease of use. The hidden rear water squirt nozzles and air horns are also remote controlled.
The exterior of the car was painted by us in a tri-stage PPG paint called "Yella". The flames, again done by us are in green and the paint is "Green with Envy". As you can see the paint flips between yellow, orange and green, depending on the lighting. The flames have smoke air brushed in at the front and bottom of the car and has a demon hidden in 3D relief on the hood at the nose. The doors have been completely shaved and are remote operated as is the rear deck lid. The flames have been edged and trimmed off by hand with a lighter color green. The car is set off by a pair of Lake Pipes with matching green flame tips.
The battery has been relocated to the rear and the fuel cap is hidden inside the trunk. The basis for this car was a California owned Mercury which by itself cost $40,000.00 a decade ago. There is no way to build this car for under $150k and have it done right as this one is. This car is kept in a climate controlled garage year round and has never seen rain let alone snow.

1950 Mercury Custom Coupe
If you get a bunch of gearheads in a room together and they get to talking about what the ultimate hot rod is, inevitably there will be three constants on the list; the ’32 Ford Hi Boy Roadster, the ’32 Ford 3 window coupe and the subject of this ad; the iconic ’50 Merc coupe.
The quintessential lead sled; the Merc defined the full bodied hot rod in the ’50’s. Its flowing lines were a vast canvas on which customizers could practice what was a fairly new art form back in the late ’40’s, early 50’s. Chopped, channeled, frenched and decked. That’s what you did if you wanted your Merc to stand out in a crowd!
And the sled being offered here does that in spades!
Designed to emulate customs made famous by legends like Sam and George Barris, Gene Winfield and many others, this rolling piece of art has all of the elements mentioned above, in addition to being wrapped in stunning Candy Apple Red paint, white tuck and roll interior with a multi-carb’d Flathead under the hood! Held in a vast private collection consisting of only the finest custom automobiles, the work was done by Steve’s Auto Restorations using elements of Chevrolet, Pontiac, Cadillac, Olds & Kaiser. The hardtop body has no "B" pillar, the headlights have been "Frenched", hood corners have been rounded and of course it wouldn’t be a ’50’s custom without Appleton spots!
The interior features white "Tuck and Roll", laminated plastic knobs and a ’57 Olds steering wheel, power steering, a hidden audio system and solenoid operated doors, windows and trunk The business end features a full dress Motorhead City 1950 Flathead engine featuring an Offenhauser intake and heads and three Stromberg ’97 carbs. House of Color supplied the Candy Apple over Gold exterior and "Von Dutch" style pinstriping. Wides whites with full Cadillac wheel covers completes the deal!
