55' Chevy Gassers

Documented, authentic, original 1955 Chevy movie car driven by singer James Taylor and Beach Boy Dennis Wilson in the iconic 1971 movie "Two-Lane Blacktop." This '55 is one of the three built by Richard Ruth for Universal Studios (two identical straight axle '55s and one stunt car) for "Two-Lane Blacktop." This particular '55 was used to film scenes inside the car, and brackets for some of the camera and recording gear used during filming are still visible on the car today. Only used in "Two-Lane Blacktop," it was sold to a studio mechanic shortly after filming was completed. The car passed through several owners before it was located in Canada in 2000. The '55 was authenticated by Richard Ruth before it was brought back to the U.S. by "Two-Lane Blacktop" historian Walt Bailey for a combination restoration and preservation project with the help of Ruth. Replacing only what was necessary while preserving as many original components as possible, the car was returned to its weathered, primer gray 1971 on-screen appearance. The car features the correct Ruth-built straight axle with coilovers, a tunnel-rammed 454, M-22 Muncie Rock Crusher 4-speed, '60s Olds posi-traction rear, a no-nonsense gasser-style black interior and still wears its custom built fiberglass front end, fiberglass doors with sliding windows and fiberglass trunk lid. The "Two-Lane Blacktop" '55 has been featured in national car magazines, numerous national car shows and was displayed at the Smithsonian Institution to inaugurate an exhibit on Route 66. In 2009, James Taylor was reunited with the car where it was featured at a concert, after which Taylor introduced and screened "Two-Lane Blacktop" for the audience. The "Two-Lane Blacktop" 1955 Chevy is street legal and comes with extensive documentation and restoration photos.

1955 Chevy Gasser, Frame off restoration, Fiberglass flip front end, 454 Big Block, tunnel ram with two 450 Holley carbs, Muncie 4 speed transmission with inline shifter, 373 posi rear end, relocated leaf springs, front suspension is stock upper and lower A arms with ball joint spacers and big block Impala coil springs, rides and handles awesome. Front disc brakes, A lot of new parts! Very intense custom flaked paint job that absolutely glows in the sun, a definitely must see in person, all lettering on the car is done in vinyl, so it can be removed if new owner does not care for. The car has been restored with quality workmanship!!

his was a quarter mile car for 40 years and ran a 331 with a powerglide and 12 bolt rear, but it maintained an un-molested body and interior.
When I purchased the car, I felt it deserved a ground up restoration in which I had done by the best, complete factory style wiring harness, new electric wipers, Vintage Large Diameter Stuart Warner Gauges W/matching Stuart Warner Tach also changed to some more reliable components.

Original California seamless frame, front end was replaced with a Nicky Chevrolet Heavy duty front axle with disc brakes,4 new leaf springs ,4 new shocks, Chrome Moly Ladder Bars, 8 point roll cage, all new braking system with Hurst line Loc,

M 21 Muncie completely rebuilt,Vintage one piece Hurst Shifter Re-built and Re-Chromed, 11" Centerforce Clutch ,Vintage NHRA cast steel blow shied, base motor is a 1966 365 H.P. Corvette that is bored to 331 CU. IN. with extensive work performed: Virgin steel Crank, new steel rods, forged aluminum pistons, roller cam and lifters, roller rockers,cross ram intake with two new 600 holleys port matched and polished, balanced and blue printed, original fuelie heads w/ big valves, fenderwell headers, Hi Volume Edelbrock Electric fuel pump and pressure regulater with large capacity fuel filter and built to run on pump gas and able to be street or track driven, this was not intended to be a pristine show car, It was meant to be a proud piece of history and used

I tried to maintain as much of the original patina as possible, This is pretty much a 1960's period correct car!, the roof still has 45 year old paint, all original paint on perfect un-cut radio delete dash and garnish mouldings, all interior is original fabric with the exception of freshing up the front seat and front door panels that had some wear!
