Trent Sherrill - photographer
Six questions for Trent Sherrill of Sherrill Hot Rods Assoc.
Trent Sherrill, a successful young photographer, is the owner and founder of Sherrill Hot Rods Association. He organizes, produces, and shoots his own events, which include Hod Rods and models. His work has been featured on covers of automotive magazines such as Amusin’ Cruisin’.
As a Hub member, he uses his garage to display his work and connect with members to find cars for more shoots! We asked him a few questions about his photography this week, so check it out!
1) How did you get started in photography?
On my 19th birthday (in 2007), I produced/organized my 1st shoot, but it wasn’t until July of 2008 that I did the photography on my first shoot. Since then I’ve been growing in knowledge and skill.
2) What sort of planning goes into one of your shoots?
The model or car guy comes to me, and then I build the theme/concept of the shoots around what they bring to me. But the main thing is that the shoot MUST have a purpose. That’s why I tend not shoot at cars shows… all the car show pics look the same.
The organizing is easy for me as well, because I’m a Retail Commercial General Contractor (I work for Construction Solutions). If I can organize a job site, I can surely run a photo shoot.
3) Why Hot Rods?
The reason why I love dealing with hot rods/ classics/customs is because they’re not modern. It’s not a type of car you can just go buy off a lot/dealership.
There’s always a difference when you see a newer mustang go by with big rims—you just look at it and then go back to what you were doing… but if you saw a Model A with a open headers pass by, it’s that “Little Kid” factor, where you’re just left in awe and say “wow that was a awesome car!!!”
4) You say on your garage page that your art is “all about the lifestyle.” Can you elaborate on this?
[I say that] Because a lot of people are into the industry now because “its kewl,” etc. but I do it for the cars and the old style of living. I stay close and network with the individuals/groups that are all about the cars and the traditional/vintage point.
5) Where do you get your inspiration?
Well just from growing up north of Bakersfield (I’m from Porterville). When my father was alive he always took me and my sister to the Famoso Drags “March Meets,” and over the years being around builders and such really kept the “Hot Rodism” alive in my motivation.
To add on to that, I network/hang out with Skratch of Skratchs Garage a lot so he keeps me in the right direction as well.
6) What’s your favorite feature of the Hub, and how do you use it?
Posting new pics and bulletins—it gets me embraced on the main page. I can’t
wait to do a video/interview so I can speak about what I’m doing & show the HUB community that I am 21 years old and doing it the right way.
Teen’s my age aren’t motivated like the good ole’ days & I know its true about me when I hear “you sure act a lot older than my age.”
