Re: 1928 - 29 Ford hot rod
Collecting the parts presented one of Jay Dean's major challenges when he decided to build this roadster. The six-year build time also taking so long owing to his job looking after vintage and classic race cars taking him all over the U.S., leaving precious little car building time at home. That job, however, did provide his color of choice, the red hue found on a 1932 Alfa Romeo in his custody.
However, it was a long while between acquiring the "kit form" original sheetmetal and applying paint! Sure it was an original roadster, but it was in pieces, with a badly hacked floor and subrails. This prompted Jay to fabricate a new floor, channeling the body the width of the rails in the process. Those rails, incidentally, are also owner-fabricated, using 3x2 steel box painstakingly tapered to appear original, with stock framehorns added, and a Speedway Motors dropped front crossmember.
A custom rear crossmember with a suicide-style perch mounts a 1946 Ford rear spring with four leaves removed, mounted atop the 8-inch axle casing as per stock Model A. 1936 Ford wishbones locate the rearend. Split 'bones were also used up front, along with a Superbell dropped I-beam and 1948 Ford backing plates and spindles, all chromed by San Marcos Polishing and Plating. Buick drums complete the traditional look of the front end, as does the use of an F-1 pickup steering box.
A channeled body can make even a small-block Chevy appear to sit higher in the chassis than usual, and coupled with an original Offenhauser intake the air cleaners on the four owner-rebuilt 97s now sit perfectly just above the level of the cowl. There's no progressive linkage here, all four carbs opening in unison thanks to more Jay fabrication. Gas is fed from an owner-made (see a theme here?) 14-gallon aluminum tank behind the seat to the 1966-vintage 365hp 327, which was machined by Fallbrook Machine and assembled at home using new pistons, an Isky 3/4 race cam, and a Mallory YZ distributor with PerTronix internals. Starting with a pair of exhaust flanges, Jay built the headers using 1936 Ford torque tube sections, just like in the old days, before installing modified VW Stinger baffles then having them chromed. Original Cal Custom valve covers complete the engine.
A rebuilt (guess who by?) BorgWarner four-speed makes the roadster fun to drive, with an 11-pound Scheifer flywheel, and an original '60s Hurst shifter. Now a traditional hot rod wouldn't look right without the correct rubber, so you'll find G78-15 bias-plies in the rear and 5.60-15s doing the steering, all mounted on Wheel Vintiques steelies with caps 'n' rings.
With the body pieced together so all gaps and panel fit was perfect, the addition of a '37 Ford dash, and exterior color choice of the aforementioned Alfa Romeo red and Ivory white completed, Jay handed the roadster over to Rex Upholstery in nearby Oceanside, California. Rex absolutely nailed the period upholstery, not only matching the paint colors perfectly with the tuck 'n' roll inserts and Italian wool carpet, but also by extending the same attention to detail into the trunk.
It'd be remiss of us not to mention that steering wheel. Sure, an English Morris Minor wheel is unusual in an American-built hot rod in its own right, but this one has history. See, Jay was discussing with his brother in England how he wanted to use a banjo wheel on the car, but it had to have a few inches of "dish" to work. His brother mentioned he might have just the thing, and pulled this wheel, which had been on Jay's first car at 14, from the rafters of the garage, and mailed it over!

1929 Ford Model A - Sam Conrad Roadster
Never be afraid to ask questions, folks. You never know where the answers will lead.
On the opening Menu page in our Sept. '14 issue, we ran a photo of the Beach Boys, circa 1963, posed around a hot roadster in front of the Capitol Records building. We didn't know anything about the car and asked for help in the photo's caption. Boy, did we get it.
We heard from Sam Conrad, who owned the car when the photo was taken, and from Dick Scritchfield, a friend of Sam's who was among several fellow L.A. Roadster club members who helped him build the car. We published those letters and others in the Nov. '14 issue, but realized that his car deserved a closer look. Turns out Sam's roadster appeared in a half-dozen different stories in HRM in 1963 and '64, but for some reason never got a feature article. That didn't happen until another of Sam's L.A. Roadster club buddies, LeRoi "Tex" Smith, wrote about it for Popular Hot Rodding —after writing all of the articles about the car in HRM.
Sam was one of the L.A. Roadsters' original members. He joined the club in 1957 "right out of high school," he says. "The guys were great, and hot rodding gave me camaraderie and friendships that I really enjoyed." In those days he owned a basket-case '32, "but I gave up on that when I bought the 1929 Ford Model A highboy in 1959."
He found it sitting in a garage, a dormant project car that had been parked for a dozen years. It took some sorting out, but he turned it into a sharp hot rod, with a 296-inch, 3⁄8x3⁄8 flathead sitting in front of a mahogany firewall fashioned by Carlos Smith, Tex Smith's father. Sam drove the roadster like this for two years, but as the flathead grew tired, Sam started looking for a more potent mill.
He found one: a 483-inch Olds mated to a B&M automatic, originally built by Hugh Tucker for his A/Street roadster. Putting that much motor into the car was going to require other changes, so Sam tore the car down to rebuild it from the ground up. Tex, recognizing the car as good story fodder for HRM, got out his camera and documented some of the major steps.

Re: 1928 - 29 Ford hot rod
In "Boxing the Rails" (HRM Mar. '63), there's Sam with Carlos Smith, reinforcing the car's '32 frame with boxing plates and new crossmembers. The May '63 HRM showed how you could build "Custom Radius Rods for Under $15." A month later, the car got a set of "Wild Outdoor Headers" made from bent tubing, rolled sheetmetal, and a flange kit from C-T Automotive. In "Hang 'Em Handy" in the Nov. '63 HRM, Sam's car was among several shot by Tex to illustrate various ways to mount a license plate to the front of a hot rod. (Other notable rods that appeared in that story included Norm Grabowski's T-bucket, Scritch's Deuce, and the Dick Flint roadster, at that point owned by Duane Kofoed.) The last how-to Tex wrote about the car for HRM was "Bolt-In Bars" in June '64, showing how a roadster could be fitted with a rollbar that bolts in for the strip and then unbolts for the street.
If there's a common thread running through these stories, it's their low-buck, everyman nature. Sam's car was not a mega-dollar show car, but a good-looking, well-built hot rod HRM readers could aspire to build.
Then again, thanks to his club pals, Sam got help building the car from some of rodding's guiding lights. And in those days, he enjoyed opportunities that don't exist anymore. For example, for a time he and Scritch lived across the street from Phil Weiand's shop. They got to know the guys there and were able to borrow the keys to work in the machine shop after hours. In a similar vein, Scritch's relationship with a local auto dealer (he was a claims adjuster for the SoCal AAA) allowed him access to that dealer's paint booth when he and Sam painted—and repainted—the roadster.
It's ironic that, while coverage of Sam's car started with HRM, the most comprehensive stories written about the roadster appeared in rival Popular Hot Rodding. Scritchfield showed much of the car's assembly in the June '63 "Building a Street Roadster," and Tex, who had become a freelancer, wrote a full feature called "Strategy for a Street Roadster" in the Nov. '65 issue.
It's clear that Sam loved his car, and loved running with the L.A. Roadsters. But by 1968, Sam's career and the demands of raising a family altered his priorities, and he sold the car to Bob Gorby, who would remain its caretaker for the next 44 years.
And really, Sam still loves his car. He was eager to help us with this story, generously digging into his albums, scanning old photos, chasing down magazines where his car appeared, and reliving those days when a bunch of like-minded guys helped each other build what would become iconic and much-loved hot rods.

To Hell
The Beach Boys photo isn't the only brush with celebrity Sam's car had. It also played a role in the (in)famous B-movie Hot Rods to Hell. Log on to YouTube and search for "Hot Rods to Hell Chase Scene." At about 2 minutes in, you can spot Sam's car joining the rogue rods chasing poor Dana Andrews and his family. Sam had no idea how his car was going to be used, and you can imagine the clean-up job he faced after all those brodies in the dirt!

1929 Ford Model A Roadster
Time Warp Kool... this retro styled 29 Ford Model A Roadster Hot Rod easily rocks the charts and turns up the volume in more ways than one, so listen up. Previously selected as one of the magazine cover cars for the "Rod and Custom's Top 100 Best of 2000" and have been informed, this beauty has roots following back to Eddies Speed Shop. Taking us back to a time when creating something entirely different and totally custom included generous chrome, horsepower, straight pipes, creative body-mods and of course, heavy metal flake finishes. Creativity often combined styling cues and performance goodies derived from other makes/models. OK, let's get on with the rest of the show...
Completely custom and collectively loud! The body and components have been totally customized and finished in a wonderful period-style" Kandy Apple Green" professional quality paint finish. Features include stock height "Model A" windshield, body color wheels w/bias ply wide whites, Dodge Lancer spinner hub-caps, custom fiberglass grill w/chrome mesh insert, sharply-canted 1962 Thunderbird headlight bezels, canted 1958 Chevrolet Bel Air taillight bezels, anodized aluminum strip lower rear panel, modified 1950 Oldsmobile dash/steering wheel, chrome plated knobs/bezels and horizontally pleated tuck-n-roll white leather w/black carpet...
Appearing as though the Roadster body is deeply channeled over the frame is accomplished with a custom built chromoly chassis that's hidden by a full underbody belly-pan, allowing a very low profile with no sacrifice of interior room to the frame rails. Suspension features include, chrome I-beam dropped front axle w/chrome buggy spring, chrome hairpins & steering components, Buick front drum brakes, braided brake lines, Viper coil-over 4 link rear suspension, rear drum brakes and more...
Now for the fun part... power begins with a 1957 Chrysler 392 cubic inch Hemi built by the famous "Dyno Don". Features include polished aluminum Edelbrock six-pack intake manifold, 6 GM/Rochester carburetors, eight right-angle custom chrome w/motorcycle baffles (keeps the noise to an acceptable level), Mallory ignition, chrome 12V alternator, chrome Hemi valve covers, chrome pulley's and brackets. Transferring the power is a Chrysler three-speed 727 Torque-Flite automatic transmission w/long handled Corvette shifter and narrowed Ford 9" rear differential. Too much fun...

1929 Ford Model A
1929 Ford Coupe
"Bonneville Girl"
I had this car professionally built approx 3 years ago from ground up using a wedge-chopped steel Ford body on a real 1932 Ford boxed frame and various other vintage Ford body parts to look like a traditional hot rod racer. Last year, the car completed over 2,400 miles driving round-trip on Hot Rod Magazine's 2014 "Power Tour" from Charlotte, NC to Wisconsin Dells, WI and was awarded a Long Haul Certificate & Award.
1929 Ford body with wedge chop and filled roof
1932 Ford boxed frame
1931 Ford radiator shell off Standard pick-up truck
1932 Ford hood
1940 Ford steering wheel w/ tilt column
1946 Ford dropped axle
1950 Pontiac taillights
1960 Triumph trunk hinges
350 Chevy w/ T350 trans
GM 10 bolt rear
Steel floor
All new wiring harness
Professional interior in red w/ traditional style stitching
Hidden CD stereo w/ USB port for iphone
4-bar link suspension with coil over shocks in rear
All wood removed from body and replaced with steel
682 Headlights
Lokar Shifter
HEI distributor
Coker 16" steel wheels and radial tires
Disc brakes in front
Power windows
Aluminum radiator
Dual exhaust w/ traditional Smitty's mufflers then wrapped
Built to look like a post-war salt flats racer with some modern safety details such as suspension and disc brakes. Car was photographed by Hot Rod Magazine and posted on their website several times during the Power Tour. Professional artwork was made of car for posters and T-shirts, can be included. Car is also used in Germany as their publicity ad for an "All American Automotive Parts" company, flyer included.
Exterior numbering, lettering and pinstriping done by hand in a traditional style. Car is geared for highway speeds, is excellent on MPG, has never been raced and handles very well. This is the most comfortable Model A that I've ever owned and driven for legroom and ride.
The wedge chop (lower in front than rear of cab) allows for a more aggresive raked look with more headroom in the rear of the coupe. Three layer paint with yellow under red then black epoxy flat paint as final layer, then buffed for hours with various areas of black that was sanded down to look as if car has been worn and used for years. Includes all photos of car during build. Car is super fun and ready to go.
