Punched Out - 1923 Dodge / 1926 Ford roadster
Copper. Metal fabricators have been shaping the stuff for 10,000 years. Jason Pall is one of the few who apply that craft to their Hot Rods. This hybrid half-breed—part Dodge, mostly Ford—started out as a $250 Craigslist purchase of a neglected and hacked-up body shell that Jason eventually abandoned on the roof of his Bear Metal Kustoms shop (Morro Bay, California).
After some cyberspace teasing from his employees while off attending the SEMA Show, Jason vowed to turn the castoff body into “a bare-bones Hot Rod that carries my style.” Inspiration came from the 29th element on the periodic table.
Built from scratch and on the cheap using an assortment of parts stashed in Jason’s shop, the liberally louvered roadster served as a daily-driven showcase for Bear Metal’s skills and capabilities until it was recently acquired by a Pennsylvania rodder.
A much-modified chassis provides 3 1/2 inches of drop in front of the firewall. Bear Metal boxed a set of Model A framerails before initiating the smooth sweep that required about 50 cuts to the frame. All gaps were TIG-welded for a seamless appearance. Custom crossmembers were fabricated out of 1 1/2-inch DOM tubing. Firestone 5.0-15 tires surround Early Wheel Co.'s smooth-center, 15x4.5-inch wheels, accented with copper paint.

1930 Dodge Pickup
We have to admit that we don’t see a ton of early Dodge products done up as street rods or customs. We see even fewer of them done in the Rat Rod style. However, that’s not the only reason why we found this ’30 Dodge so interesting. Built by The Hot Rod Shop in Rancho Cordova, CA, it takes a keen eye to notice all the small details that make this rod so unique.
Model: Natosha Wengreen
First of all, this was not originally a Dodge pickup body. This was actually a ’30 Dodge five-window coupe. The coupe was found by a friend of The Hot Rod Shop’s Derek Carlson, “It was sitting on the side of the house and they were looking to get rid of it, so I went up to Winnemucca, NV where the car was and took a look at it,” said Carlson. “It looked like someone had tried to build a hot rod out of it sometime in the ’70s but didn’t do a very good job, it was all smashed up in the back,” he said. So Carlson purchased the coupe and brought it back to the shop in California.
We hear stories all the time about guys stumbling onto parts or entire cars out in the woods, but seldom talk to the individuals that it actually happened to. This time it actually happened to Carlson. “We were out four-wheeling and found the bed, as it turned out it was a real Dodge bed, so we took it back for the project,” he tells us. The bed itself is from an early 1940′s Dodge. The shop crew shortened the bed by two feet to match the proportions of their project, and suddenly they’d gone from building a coupe to a completely unique pickup truck.
The frame of this project is custom front to rear. From the firewall back it’s all built from boxed tubing, while the front utilizes some of the original Dodge frame. The front section has been fully boxed as well as z’d twelve inches. Out back the suspension setup is a four-link with air bags, while in the front there’s a Ford drop axle and transverse leaf spring. The front tie bar is actually built from a threading dye that was found in an old rail yard.

Re: Mopar hot rod
Continuing the Mopar theme is the motivating force behind this little pickup, a 392 cubic inch Hemi. Pulled from a Chris Craft boat, this marine engine has been completely rebuilt, topped with a custom intake manifold and four real Stromberg 97 carburetors. Lakes headers along with tips salvaged from the donor boat handle the exhaust duties.
The spark plugs and headers also have custom built copper covers, which further lend to the vintage look of this truck. The transmission is a Torquflite 727, with a Lokar shifter topped by a World War I bayonet handle to provide gear changes. Rear differential is a Ford 9-inch. The only other appointments to the sparse interior include aluminum bomber seats with padding made from real bomber jackets.
We have to say that we love this build and can’t stop looking at it and all of the little details that make it so well done. We realize that there’s a lot of work, fabrication, etc. to get the look right, and the overall outcome is fantastic. What do you think?

1931 Plymouth Hotrod
Car is all steel with a 4' Chop and no rust that was completed two years ago and has only been driven to local car shows and a few Saturday Oldies Cruise nights. Interior is all white with grey carpet completed by a local professional upholstery shop. Motor is a rebuilt Mopar 360 to keep it true to the make of car (hate it when everyone puts SBC's in everything "non-chevy") with a nice and mild "loppy" cam that will idle all night at a downtown cruise with no problems or overheating, a factory remanufactured 727 Automatic trans with Lokar Shifter, Mopar MSD Ignition, sitting on top of a Holley 4-barrel carb is a Stainless Steel Fake fuel injection system that fools most people (the looks without the complications and a nice running electric choke holley), steel 32 Ford grille and shell (the 31 Plymouth shell is way too ugly to put on a beautiful car like this) but it has a mid-30's Plymouth badge on the grille that I paid $200 for that sets it off as a Plymouth, electric fan with aluminum radiator that never allows the car to overheat, Sanderson Ceramic Coated headers and collectors with built in mufflers (sound great but not too loud), Frame is a new aftermarket frame that was custom built with flat 32 rails to accommodate this 31 body, TCI front suspension with disc brakes, 8" rebuilt Ford rearend with drum brakes and coil-over suspension, BF Goodrich wide whitewall radials on Craigar Mags with spinners, Stainless front and rear bumpers with stainless headlights and tail lights. No windows in the doors but the regulators are in the doors with stainless window and door handles (never put the windows in because I only drive the car in good weather when it's warm) I do have the original glass for the doors though.
I have only taken this car out to local shows and cruise nights and it always gets a thumbs-up from everyone that sees it. Over the past two summers it has won many trophy's and awards including:
"Best of Show" at the local annual spring Mopar show with approximately 300 entries
"People's Choice Award" at a local Carquest show with over 100 entries
"Best Street Rod" this summer at the Northwest Motor Fest
