1931 FORD ROADSTER SPEEDSTER SPECIAL SCTA CULVER CITY HALIBRAND OFFENHAUSER 348
The Speedster Special is a true work of art. This one of a kind Doane Spencer inspired creation is the result of years and years of thinking, studying, planning, Hunting and finally constructing what the owner felt was the perfect Model A V8 of the fifties and also by respecting the « birth of hot rodding » touch.
The creation started by massaging a Brookville roadster body laid down on a mint original Model A frame. The frame was streched 3’’ to allow the positioning of the 348ci without an annoying recess firewall.
A T5 transmission brings the horsepower and the torque to an original un-molested Halibrand Culver City quick change. This one is hung in place by a Posie’s Model A spring and 1940 Ford split wishbones.
The driving experience starts by having an original 1940 Ford Deluxe Steering Wheel in your hands, which is mounted on a Schrœder sprint car gear box.
The front suspension consist of a CE 47’’ drilled I-beam hooked up to the frame by a pair of 1940 split wishbones. The braking system is your typical 1940’s Juice brake Ford set up and dressed with 1959 Buick aluminium Finned drums all around.
One of the nicest piece on this car is probably the windshield. It’s a solid brass custom construction that follows the curves and shapes of the Model A cowl. It seems to be doing 100 mph even when it’s standing still.

"Candy Cabriolet" 1931 Ford Rod & Custom cover car!
1931 Ford Cabriolet that was built in the late 1950’s by a father and son in southern California, then later featured on the cover of Rod & Custom magazine.
The car had been stored away by its original builder in the early 1960’s until discovered in 2013 and as a result, it has remained in incredible condition.
It still wears the original candy apple red paint that was applied by father and son in 1957 and the original white custom upholstery that was stitched by a well known Del's top shop. I have a few trophies from the big shows it was in and even the first trophy from a highschool car show. I also have the original show card that was displayed with the car. When I bought the car, it wasn't running. It had a broken piston and had been sitting that way for decades. I decided to pull the engine and repair it. The engine was in good condition otherwise and had originally been fitted with.060 over pistons, so I had a new set installed by a well-known local flathead builder. He also rebuilt the carburetor and fuel pump. All other parts are original to the 1950's build. The car has '40 ford juice brakes and I replaced the hydraulics for the brake system (Master cylinder and all four wheel cylinders). Now the car. runs and drives after more than 50 years!

1931 Ford Model A MODEL A/B
A-V8 1931 Ford Roadster. It was built over the last couple of years using the inspiration from builders like Vern Tardel and the Rolling Bones. It comes with a good Ohio title in my name.
The car started its life with a new body from Brookville Roadster. The body started its transformation at Steadfast MFG. There Henry Richards took the body to the next level. He installed his proto-type rear subrail kit to mount the body to a 32 chassis. He now sells these same kits all over the world. He also fabricated the rear crossmember cover, grafted in and shortened the 1940 ford dash, and modified the rear to accept a 32 tank. Then I received the body and continued the process by having the deck lid punched with 144 louvers, installing a brookville 32 cowl vent, laying the stainless windshield posts back, fabricating a custom floor board and installing several custom made braces to stiffen up the body. Then the entire inside of the car was sprayed with Line-X. The outside of the body was completely scotch brited then clear coated with a product from Por 15. It has held up very well and didnt yellow like some Ive seen.
Now onto the chassis. The frame of the car started out as a really nice and clean original frame with all three original crossmembers. The K-member is still uncut with rivets, and is very nice. Mounted to the K-member is a set of modified 1932 pedals with an adapter to use the correct mastercylinder. The frame was sent to Thunder Road in Mansfield Ohio where it was put in a jig and squared up and there it had the model A rear crossmember installed and the front crossmember modified to fit the motor. The chassis consist of an original chromed 1932 wishbone connected to a really rare Okie Adams dropped chrome axel (less then 100 made). On the old chrome spindles are mounted new Wilson Welding lincoln brakes. In the rear is an original banjo rear end out of a 1937 ford that was from a restored car. It is mounted with the original shocks and a pair of 1936 ford bones in the rear and also another pair of Wilson Welding brakes. The torque tube was also professionally shortened to mount up to the transmission. At this point the chassis and some suspension parts were powdercoated either a satin or gloss black to match. The chassis rides on a set of 16” steelies in the front and a pair of 18” in the back. They are wrapped in new Excelsior Stahl radial tires, 5.50/16 and 7.00/18. Then a set of Kevin Lee spun aluminum discs were powdercoated and installed with chrome hubcaps.
The best part of the car has to be the flathead. This flathead was built for an online magazine. It was a show piece that was built and documented in detail for a 4 part series online article for Precision Engine Tech. It can be read here: https://theshopmag.com/features/project-flathead-part-1 There was over 10k in parts alone put into this engine from all of the name brand companies. Some of the parts include an original 1949-1953 block which was sanded and smoothed to a perfect finish, a Scat crank, Scat rods, Egge piston and ring set, Egge valves and valve springs with guides and adjustable lifters, Egge connecting rod and main bearings, mellings oil pump, MSD distributor and wires, Fluidamper crank pully, Tuff Stuff alternator, Edelbrock aluminum heads, Isky cam, Egge waterpumps chromed, Best gaskets, early polished Eddie Meyer intake water cooled, and two original 97 Large logo Stromberg carbs fully rebuilt with gennie parts and plumbed with copper lines, and a custom made air cleaner is mounted on top. Also complimenting the engine is an original beehive oil filter that was chromed in the 50's. The engine is mounted to a completely rebuilt 1939 Ford transmission.
The engine is cooled by a set of chrome new waterpumps and an electric fan and mounted to a Walker Radiator. Mounted to the radiator is a new Brookville grill that was grafted with an original 1932 ford commercial grill. The bullnose area of the commercial grill was removed and reshaped to blend into the aftermarket grill. The insert on the grill is an original and then I stamped and fabricated a center chrome trim bar to resemble a Pines Winterfront. In front of that is mounted a custom built headlight bar to resemble the Rolling Bones style with NOS 1932 Ford commercial headlights. To light up the rear is a set of chrome Electroline taillights.
The steering consists of a new Schroeder steering box with a 16:1 ratio reducer and drilled aluminum pitman arm. Extra support has been mounted inside the cowl to allow for this setup. Outside is a hand made aluminum blister to cover the steering box. Mounted to the top of the column is a new 1940 ford style steering wheel. Inside the car is a custom Tea’s seat recovered in distressed vinyl, a set of original 40 ford gauges(not working), a chrome glove box hides a set of 3 gauges, a Rebel wiring panel, and an original pair of military seat belts.
A couple of other things are the new gas tank with a custom made gas cap in the back. A rolled front spreader bar, and a custom recessed rear spreader bar. Socal front shock mounts and chrome pete and jake shocks up front. Custom wire looms up front, a custom made battery box, and a handmade cup holder is also part of it.

1931 Ford Model A Sport Coup
1931 Ford Model A Sport Coupe Street Rod
Full steel body with duece grill
Ford 8BA Flathead V-8 engine and dual carburetors
Period correct Edelbrock aluminum heads
Period correct Thickstun aluminum high rise intake
1939 Ford 3-speed manual transmission
2 inch chop top roof
Custom “One Eye Crow” exhaust headers
Large Diameter dual exhaust
Upgraded to drop axle with gas shock absorbers front and rear
MotoeXotica Classic Cars is pleased to present this handsome and rarely offered 1931 Ford Hi Boy street rod, you have to start with a great design and a team of professionals who know the ins and outs of fabrication and assembly. This sweet Model A coupe is exceptionally well-executed with a two inch roof chop, and with its custom suspension, reliable Flat head V-8 and smooth color combination, is a ground-up build that combines the core strengths of old school hot rodding with top-notch modern components.
During a thorough, no excuses build starting with the body, the metal was prepared and layered in a deep green exterior with contrasting tan firewall. It was upgraded with a steel deuce grill metal ’32 metal grill shell to surround the Walker radiator. The fuel tank and the battery have been relocated to the trunk for safety and weight reasons. Modern day sealed headlamps with directional signals for modern safety without sacrificing the classic stance. The contrasting tan Lebarron Bonney cloth top is in excellent condition.
Inside, the seats are finished in a deep dark brown vinyl with a gold textured carpet. The door panel mirrors the same rich brown finish as the seats. Sporting a 1932 dash which presents a period look, but allows a full bank of modern VDO gauges. The “quick release” steering wheel is a nice touch (for the horizontally challenged). By now it’s probably pretty obvious this Ford was built to be seen, but, thanks to the nicely built Ford flat head under this car’s steel hood, that might be easier said than done! Comes complete with removable steel side curtains.
This nostalgic 30’s hot rod comes with a Ford 8BA flat head V8 engine, Edelbock aluminum heads, Thickstun high rise aluminum intake with dual carburetors, custom “One Eye Crow” headers, 1939 Ford 3-speed manual transmission, stock model A rear differential with 3.78 gears, Walker radiator, drop axle front,1940 juice hydraulic brakes and Wilwood master cylinder. It stands on staggered 16 inch black painted steelies shod with Firestone deluxe Champion tires.
Movies like American Graffiti and Two Lane Blacktop, have shown and inspired many people to build some gorgeous hot-rods over the years. Many of the great ones, like this one were based on the iconic ‘31 Ford. The build quality is fantastic, allowing convenience and comfort of a modern car, wrapped in a cool, old school package. It goes fast, stops fast and looks awesome doing it.
